Pine Bark Beetle Damage

Pine bark beetle damage shows up first as small pitch tubes and reddish-brown boring dust on the trunk, followed by canopy fading that starts at the top and works down. The beetles tunnel under the bark and cut off water and nutrient flow, an attack a stressed pine has little ability to resist.

What Pine Bark Beetle Damage Looks Like 

The first sign is rarely in the canopy. It’s on the trunk. Small pitch tubes, resin mixed with boring dust, show up where the beetles have entered the bark. They range from a few millimeters to about a half inch across and can look almost like popcorn stuck to the bark. Reddish-brown boring dust collects in crevices or piles up at the base of the tree.

Canopy symptoms follow a pattern worth knowing. Needles or foliage fade from green to a dull yellow-green, then to a straw color, starting at the top of the tree and working down. Woodpecker activity often increases around this stage, since birds go after the larvae under the bark.

A trunk inspection is what tells drought stress and beetle damage apart, since both produce similar-looking canopy fading from a distance. These signs of pine beetle infestation, pitch tubes and boring dust especially, point to a beetle problem specifically. Pine bark beetle often moves in secondarily, once a tree is already weakened.

Why Stressed Trees Are Most Vulnerable 

Healthy pines defend themselves against a beetle attack. They produce enough resin to flush the insects out before they establish, a defense sometimes visible as larger pitch masses on the bark. Stressed trees can’t mount that response, which is why infestations cluster around specific conditions.

Drought is the most common trigger in the Atlanta area. Trees near recent construction, from grading and trenching to soil compaction under heavy equipment, lose root capacity and become more susceptible. Trees recovering from storm damage carry the same vulnerability. Pines packed closely together in a stand compete harder for water. That lowers the resin defense across the group and lets an infestation spread from tree to tree faster than it would in an open landscape. A construction-adjacent pine on an office or retail property is a reasonable candidate for a beetle check, on commercial sites as much as backyards.

Pine Bark Beetle Treatment Options 

How far an infestation has progressed determines what’s on the table.

Preventive treatment on healthy, at-risk trees, near recent construction or storm damage, reduces the odds of an attack taking hold. Once beetles are established, insecticide treatment can work if caught early, but the window closes fast. A tree with significant canopy dieback and heavy pitch tube coverage has usually lost too much of its vascular system to recover.

At that point, removal addresses the tree’s condition and the safety risk a dead or dying pine poses nearby. An arborist assessment determines where a given tree falls, weighing pitch tubes, canopy condition, and overall vascular health together.

Other Atlanta Tree Pests Worth Watching 

Two other pests show up regularly enough on Atlanta properties to know on sight: ambrosia beetle and spotted lanternfly.

Ambrosia Beetle 

Ambrosia beetles tunnel into the wood and cultivate a fungus inside it. The fungus causes the damage, not direct feeding by the beetle. The telltale sign is different from pine bark beetle. Look for thin strands of boring dust, often described as looking like toothpicks, sticking out of small holes in the bark. Ambrosia beetle damage tends to increase in spring and can progress fast on a stressed tree. Ambrosia beetle treatment follows the same preventive-versus-removal logic as pine bark beetle.

Spotted Lanternfly 

This pest is newer to Georgia. Georgia sightings of spotted lanternfly began in Fulton County in October 2024. State and university monitoring has tracked its spread since, though it’s still concentrated in the Atlanta metro area. What does spotted lanternfly damage look like? Spotted lanternfly tree damage shows up as sticky honeydew residue on bark and leaves, followed by sooty mold growth. The insect feeds by piercing bark and stems. It prefers Tree of Heaven but feeds on a wide range of hardwoods. If you spot one, document it and report it to Georgia’s monitoring program.

What This Means for Commercial and HOA Properties 

Pest damage on commercial and HOA properties carries liability and curb-appeal risk beyond tree health. It’s the kind of standing risk worth folding into routine commercial tree services rather than addressing after a limb comes down.

A pine weakened by beetle activity is a fall hazard. That risk doesn’t announce itself until a limb or the whole tree comes down. On retail and office sites, a visibly declining tree near an entrance or parking area does quiet damage to curb appeal before it becomes a safety issue. Property managers who fold pest checks into a regular inspection schedule catch problems while treatment is still an option.
